About the Conference:

The Centre for Gender Studies, Research & Development established under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, functioning under the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Humanities, Jagran Lakecity University is pleased to invite you to participate in two-days international conference on “Towards Gender Equality: Overpowering Structural Barriers and Reclaiming Agency”, with the aim of bringing together a global cross-section of scholars, practitioners, policy makers and professionals from various colleges, universities and industries to a common platform, making it interdisciplinary in approach, to explore measures towards a gender-just society. In order to overpower the barriers and to achieve gender equality, it becomes very important to understand and then try to overcome them. Particularly, it has been observed that when members of the marginalized gender are provided the tools and opportunities they need to flourish in the careers of their choice, the whole society benefits. Times are changing and we have seen more and more such people entering underrepresented fields and being recognized for their work.  There are still many challenges and we have a lot to achieve yet.

Sub-Themes:

The conference papers will be divided into four panels A, B, C and D. Interested delegates may send their abstracts (200-250 words) to the given email id: octoberconference2021@gmail.com

  • A. Gender, Literature and Media:  Papers may be related to the portrayal of women and other genders in English or regional literature, mass media, print media, popular media like movies, ad films, television soaps etc, and the digital media. The papers may focus on how the gender is depicted either as an object/ entertainer or a comical character.
  • B. Gender, Justice and Human Rights:  The papers under this sub-theme may focus on the rights that are provided by the judicial system to the women and other genders and the awareness that has been created and achieved in terms of the legal aspects of gender rights. Papers may also be based upon the human rights with respect to women and other genders. Gender equality is a basic human right. Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948, stated that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” and Article 2 stated that “everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, birth or other status.”
  • C. Gender and Leadership:  Under this sub-theme, the papers may cater to the gender roles in the organized and unorganized sectors of working space and in politics. Despite significant promotion of diversity in companies, as well as legislation for equal opportunities for women, men and the other genders, it has been observed that the women and the third gender still remain largely in the minority in decision-making positions. This refrain the women from rising beyond a certain level in a hierarchy within the organizations. However, there are also examples of women and other genders who have broken the glass ceiling and have been able to achieve the highest ladder of success. Papers may also be based upon the home managers, who are leaders in their own working space but all their efforts and hard work are never acknowledged.
  • D. Gender and Sexual Diversity:  This sub-theme can discuss issues related to sexual orientation and the challenges that are associated with the same. Papers under this sub-theme may largely comprise about the third gender or the ‘sexual minorities’ who do not conform to predominant heterosexual and gender norms and are often faced with marginalization, stigmatization, discrimination and even criminalization.

The conference papers should cover majorly three aspects in each sub-theme related to gender studies:

  • Challenges: What are the challenges that need to be addressed?
  •
  • Journey so far: How much has been done and how much have we achieved in bridging the gap between genders?
  •
  • Future Ahead: How can we work together towards eliminating structural barriers to achieve the goal of gender equality?
  •
